Will Distribute Generic Version of Zofran
Beijing Med-Pharm Corporation (BJGP) has won a contract to distribute a generic anti-nausea drug in China for Shanghai Ethypharm Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. The drug, which is called ondansetron Flashtab®, is a generic version of Zofran, a GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) product.
Shanghai Ethypharm, the Chinese subsidiary of the French firm, Ethypharm, focuses on drug delivery. The Flashtab® system is a melt-in-the-mouth method of delivery.
Ondansetron is a member of the 5-HT3 antagonist class of antiemetics, which are used to reduce nausea and vomiting caused by chemotherapy or radiotherapy.
Ondansetron Flashtab® must win approval of Chinese authorities before it can be sold, a process that is expected to be completed in 2009. Shanghai Ethypharm will be responsible for shepherding ondansetron Flashtab® through the regulatory process.
Beijing Med-Pharm will be responsible for sales, marketing, distribution and supply of the drug.
Beijing Med-Pharm is building a portfolio of oncology products. It recently licensed the analgesic Galake from Lotus. The company has been busily signing up new drugs that are seeking Chinese distribution (see story). As before, the terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
Earlier this week, Beijing Med-Pharm reached a definitive agreement to purchase a 49% stake in traditional Chinese medicine maker Sunstone Pharmaceutical Co. for $32 million. The deal was originally announced in April.
