China's Recent Chanes in Health Policy a Pre-Olympics Tactic

As if the Melamine pet food fiasco was not enough, the Wall Street Journal reported in Tuesday's edition of the paper that Chinese officials are investigating the sale of fake human albumin, the protein found in blood, to hospitals and clinics.

Albumin is used to maintain blood volume in the bodies of chronically ill hospital patients.

This story does not surprise me one bit, as horrific stories about China's health and food practices have been very popular lately.

As I already mentioned, there is the tainted pet food traced to Chinese wheat gluten tainted with melamine, a chemical commonly used in plastics manufacturing. Then, there is the halt order placed on toothpaste imported from China after authorities in several countries found traces of a deadly chemical in the tubes, and just last month China's ex-drug regulator was sentenced to death for taking bribes to approve less than satisfactory drugs onto the market, one of which was an antibiotic linked to the death of 10 people.

So how does the FDA react to this latest story? Spokeswoman Karen Riley said, as reported by the WSJ;

there is an alert in effect for imported blood products in general but didn't think it was related to China in particular or to this case.

Hmmm! So the U.S. is importing blood products, and the FDA does have a warning out, yet we shouldn't worry because it does not pertain to China! As if China is such a segragated part of the world that nothing produced there could possibly make its way into the U.S.!

Don't get me wrong! I am glad that the Chinese government is finally opening its eyes to criminal practices within its own borders, as I am sure China understands the economic ties with its Western partners. What I am afraid of is that China is going above and beyond their historical position to appease the world.

This "economic boom" China is experiencing sure sounds a little suspect. I am not denying the numbers, rather I am suggesting that China's current economic health is spurred by policy shifts by the historically stubborn government only recently, curiously just before the country hosts the 2008 olympic games.

But what will happen in the years following the conclusion of the games in the summer of 2008? Do you think that the Chinese government is going to stretch its resources to appease the Western nations, especially when it comes to its health and economic policies?

What will happen if the world's economies take a downturn in the near future and exports out of China take a dive, would the government still financialy dedicate itself in protecting the health and economic rights of its citizens?

I wonder!
